Renovation of the Gran Telescopio de Canarias Control Center

F1

The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) is one of the largest optical and infrared telescopes in the world, located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The GTC Control Center is responsible for the daily operation and management of the telescope. It is in charge of coordinating and supervising all operations related to the telescope, including the scheduling of observations, instrumentation monitoring, maintenance and troubleshooting.

The GTC Control Center constantly monitors the status of the telescope and its instrumentation to ensure optimal performance. In addition, regular maintenance is carried out to guarantee that the telescope is in a condition to make high quality observations. It also provides technical support to both the astronomers using the telescope and the staff on site. This may involve solving technical problems, making adjustments to instrumentation or providing assistance during observations.

The Control Center of the Gran Telescopio Canarias plays a crucial role in the operation and maintenance of this important scientific instrument, ensuring that it is available for cutting-edge observations in the field of astronomy.

Among the solutions that RDI has implemented to modernize the control center is the LAN console, which makes it possible to optimally manage and organize the work environment of each of the operators and the teams they coordinate.

The adaptation of this 24x7 operations environment includes the technical furniture, both consoles and auxiliary furniture, CXO ergonomic seating, supply and installation of Unisee II video wall with corporate paneling, as well as the signal management electronics in the video wall and also workstations with BARCO OpSpace.

Thanks to the renovation of the current Control Center with the global solution proposed by RDI, a very positive impact will be achieved for visitors to the room and in the operation of the same, since thanks to the ergonomics offered by our furniture together with the OpSpace solution of the manufacturer BARCO, operators will be able to have a better response to critical situations.

Many of the operations are performed remotely from the control center. This allows astronomers and technical staff to effectively control the telescope without having to be physically on site.
